Baldwinsville's Holidays Run on Wreaths, Gingerbread and the Community Band

The instructions for this season's first holiday event in Baldwinsville fit on one line. Bring your own clippers to cut the boughs, and bring a metal clothes hanger if you have one. Beaver Lake Nature Center provides the boughs, the wire and the bow. You leave with an evergreen wreath you built yourself.

That class runs for the first time on Friday, November 6, and it sets the tone for the next seven weeks. Most of what's on Baldwinsville's November and December calendar is hands-on. You fold paper, wire greenery or frost gingerbread. Or you take a seat while a volunteer band plays a program built for the date. Nearly all of it happens in three community buildings: the nature center on East Mud Lake Road, the library on East Genesee Street and the senior center on Canton Street. The Baldwinsville Community Band is the one group that shows up across that whole stretch.

The Band Is Already Playing

The band's fall schedule shows up on the Baldwinsville Messenger's Northwest Community Calendar. Laid out in order, it makes a run of themed concerts in a different room each time. The run opened with a Halloween program at Baldwinsville Methodist Church, 17 W. Genesee Street, on Wednesday, October 28. Three dates follow it.

Date Venue Program
Wednesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 2840 Cold Springs Road Veterans Day
Saturday, Nov. 28, after the parade Baldwinsville Public Library, 33 East Genesee St. Parade of Lights after-party
Wednesday, Dec. 9, 7 p.m. Canton Woods Senior Center, 76 Canton St. Christmas

That's a church on the edge of the village, then the library at the center of downtown, then the senior center a few blocks away. The Veterans Day concert falls on a Wednesday evening, and so does the Christmas program four weeks later. That leaves the parade after-party as the band's one weekend appearance of the season. If you can only make one, the Saturday is the easiest to fit around a work week. The Wednesday concerts are smaller rooms with a program written for the occasion.

Parade Night Ends at the Library

The Village of Baldwinsville has set the Parade of Lights for Saturday, November 28, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Smokey Hollow Plaza. The village's announcement lists three things in order. First comes the parade. Santa and the tree lighting follow right after. Then everyone heads to an after-party at the Baldwinsville Library, with another chance to meet Santa and music from the Baldwinsville Community Band.

That last stop is what makes the evening work. The parade and tree lighting are outdoors in late November. The after-party moves everyone into a warm building on East Genesee Street, where the band from the table above is waiting. Families with small children get a second, indoor shot at the Santa photo, and nobody has to go home the minute the lights come on.

It's also the night the library and the band share the bill. Each one has its own December schedule, and the rest of the season builds out from those two.

Beaver Lake Turns the Season Into a Workshop

Of the three buildings, Beaver Lake Nature Center at 8477 East Mud Lake Road has the fullest calendar. The schedule leans heavily toward making things.

Wreath-making fills more dates than anything else this season. Sessions are listed for:

  • Friday, November 6
  • Thursday, November 12 through Sunday, November 15
  • Tuesday, November 17
  • Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2

The cost is $23 for members and $26 for nonmembers, with park admission included. That price covers the materials and gets you into the park, so the wreath is the whole outing. The four days in a row in mid-November give the most chances to fit a session around a weekend. The two December dates come late enough that a wreath made then still looks fresh on the door through Christmas.

Breakfast With Santa is set for Saturday, December 5 and Saturday, December 12. The menu is pancakes, sausage and a beverage, priced at $3 to $7 "depending on your appetite," according to the nature center's event page. The $5-per-vehicle park admission isn't included in that price. For a carload of kids, the parking fee may cost more than someone's breakfast. That's worth knowing before you set out.

Natural Holiday Crafts for Kids lands on Sunday, December 6, the day after the first breakfast. Children make nature-based crafts and ornaments. The cost is $6 per child for members and $7 for nonmembers. Booking the breakfast on the 5th and the crafts on the 6th gives one family a full Beaver Lake weekend for less than the cost of a single wreath.

One evening on the nature center's calendar isn't about the holidays, but it's coming up soon. The Beaver Lake Coffeehouse on Saturday, November 7 offers acoustic music, hot coffee and desserts. The performers are The Bog Brothers, an acoustic Americana and folk band from Central New York. It's the night after the first wreath session, so the season's opening weekend at Beaver Lake covers both of the things this calendar does most: making something and listening to live music.

The Library Fills the Fridays

Back in the village, the Baldwinsville Public Library's December calendar follows the same hands-on pattern on a smaller scale. Most of its seasonal programs are drop-in afternoons, and two of them fall on Fridays:

  • Drop in Art: Beaded Snowflake, Friday, December 4, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Drop in Art: Light Up Snowman, Friday, December 18, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Gingerbread House Class, Saturday, December 19, 1 to 4 p.m., for children, registration required

The 3 p.m. start on the Friday sessions lines up with the end of the school day, and drop-in means nobody has to plan ahead. The gingerbread class is the exception. It runs three hours on a Saturday, it's listed for children, and it requires registration. With the date that close to the holidays, it makes sense to sign up early rather than count on walking in.

Plan around the library's holiday hours, too. Its posted 2026 schedule shows it closed Thursday, December 24 through Saturday, December 26. So the gingerbread class on the 19th is the last library program before the Christmas break.

How the Weeks Stack Up

Put the three buildings and the band on one timeline and the season reads as a steady run of small events, with the parade as its only big outdoor night:

  1. Fri, Nov. 6: First wreath-making session at Beaver Lake
  2. Sat, Nov. 7: Beaver Lake Coffeehouse with The Bog Brothers
  3. Wed, Nov. 11: Community Band Veterans Day concert, 7 p.m., St. Mark's Lutheran Church
  4. Thu, Nov. 12 to Sun, Nov. 15: Four straight days of wreath-making at Beaver Lake
  5. Tue, Nov. 17: Wreath-making at Beaver Lake
  6. Sat, Nov. 28: Parade of Lights, 5:30 p.m. from Smokey Hollow Plaza, then Santa and the tree lighting, then the library after-party with the Community Band
  7. Tue, Dec. 1 and Wed, Dec. 2: Final wreath-making sessions at Beaver Lake
  8. Fri, Dec. 4: Beaded Snowflake drop-in at the library, 3 to 5 p.m.
  9. Sat, Dec. 5: Breakfast With Santa at Beaver Lake
  10. Sun, Dec. 6: Natural Holiday Crafts for Kids at Beaver Lake
  11. Wed, Dec. 9: Community Band Christmas program, 7 p.m., Canton Woods Senior Center
  12. Sat, Dec. 12: Second Breakfast With Santa at Beaver Lake
  13. Fri, Dec. 18: Light Up Snowman drop-in at the library, 3 to 5 p.m.
  14. Sat, Dec. 19: Gingerbread House Class at the library, 1 to 4 p.m., registration required
  15. Thu, Dec. 24 to Sat, Dec. 26: Library closed for the holiday

The Community Band is on this list at three points: Veterans Day, parade night and the Christmas program at Canton Woods, spread over four weeks. Beaver Lake has something nearly every week from November 6 through December 12. The library takes over the last stretch before Christmas.
